The popular Korean manhwa (manga) Solo Leveling reached its conclusion in 2021, leaving millions of fans worldwide eager for more. Fortunately, an anime adaptation of the series is currently in production by A1-Pictures. However, the artist of Solo Leveling, Dubu (Jang Seong-rak), unfortunately passed away last summer and will not be able to see the anime come to life.
In honor of Dubu, the Solo Leveling team has announced that they will be releasing a side story before the anime comes out. This side story will be available on January 21, 2023 on KakaoPage and Webtoon, and will be updated every Wednesday. This extra chapter will be a great way for fans to continue to enjoy the world of Solo Leveling and pay tribute to the artist who created it.
The announcement made by the studio states that Dubu’s colleagues came together to honor his legacy: “He was respected by everyone he worked with. He ran a company and a studio while training many outstanding students and leaving them to the world. He was a leader, teacher, and pioneer of art.”
For those unfamiliar with the story, Solo Leveling is set in a world where special beings called “Hunters” must fight deadly monsters to protect humanity. The protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, is known as “the weakest hunter of all mankind” and is constantly struggling to survive. However, after a powerful encounter in a dungeon nearly ends his life, Jinwoo is chosen by a mysterious System to be its sole player, granting him the opportunity to level up his abilities and discover the secrets of the dungeons and the ultimate extent of his powers.
It is a sad news that the creator of this series passed away but it’s a great way to continue the legacy of the series and the artist. It will be interesting to see how the side story will be and how it will connect with the main series.
